When you create an account, three cryptographic keys are generated. You hold two; we hold one. To access your data, any two keys must be combined — so we cannot access your data alone, and you can recover your data even if you lose one of your keys. It's a threshold cryptography model designed for both security and resilience.
Your key shares can be backed up to secure locations of your choice — a printed QR code, a hardware token, or a trusted contact. As long as you can produce any two of the three keys, you regain full access. Our onboarding guides you through multiple recovery strategies so no single loss is catastrophic.
All SafeBox data is stored exclusively in EU-certified data centers in Germany and the Netherlands. We do not use any US-based cloud providers or sub-processors, eliminating CLOUD Act exposure entirely.
Proton and Tresorit offer excellent zero-knowledge encryption — but they use a single-key model. If you lose access to your account, there is no recovery path. SafeBox's 2-of-3 model is the only architecture that guarantees both provider-cannot-access security and customer-can-always-recover resilience. We also produce compliance audit artifacts that neither competitor offers.
Yes. SafeBox processes no personal data beyond what you upload (which we cannot read), stores everything in the EU, and supports all data subject rights including erasure (which is cryptographic — we can rotate and destroy keys). We can provide a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) on request.
